Spread betting is a funny thing.
You can be completely confident in one football team to beat another, but that team can have a margin of victory that won't win you money because they didn't cover the spread.
Just look at what happened with the Sunday night NFL matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets.
This makes things pretty interesting in the collegiate football world right now, where the heavy favorite to win their third consecutive national championship hasn't been the best bet when it comes to the spread.
You read that correctly.
The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs are 3-1 favorites at BetMGM to win the championship outright on Jan. 8 at NRG Stadium in Houston, but they are also 0-5 against the spread this season.

NC State 0-4-1 ATS
UTSA 0-4 ATS
Indiana St 0-4 ATS
Texas Southern 0-4 ATS
NC A&T 0-4 ATS
Georgia 0-5 ATS
Illinois 0-5 ATS
St. Francis 0-5 ATS
Citadel 0-5 ATS
Vandy 0-6 ATS
Simply put, Georgia isn't winning for as big of a margin as sportsbooks are projecting, and that means bettors putting money on the Bulldogs to cover are walking away without winnings.
This is something for fans and bettors to keep in if they want to place money on the Bulldogs to defeat the No. 20 Kentucky Wildcats next Saturday. USA Today Sports notes that Georgia leads the all-time series 62-12-2 and has won the last 10 meetings — but Kentucky has covered the spread in the last four straight matchups.
That game, should you feel confident enough to wager on it, is slated for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. ET.
